Overview

This beginner-friendly course is designed to take you from knowing nothing about PowerPoint to being able to create, design, and deliver professional-looking presentations. You will learn the core functionalities of the software, from adding text and images to applying simple animations and delivering your presentation with confidence. No prior experience is necessary.

Target Audience

Students, office workers, entrepreneurs, teachers, and anyone who needs to create effective visual presentations.

Upon completion, students will be able to:

  • Confidently navigate the PowerPoint interface and use key tabs.
  • Create a new presentation, add various slide types, and manage slide order.
  • Format text, shapes, and images for visual impact and consistency.
  • Insert and manipulate pictures, icons, videos, and other media.
  • Apply and customize slide transitions and object animations.
  • Utilize speaker tools and practice techniques to deliver a polished presentation.

Outline

Module 1: Navigating the PowerPoint Environment

  • Get comfortable with the PowerPoint workspace and understand its main components.
    • Welcome & Overview: What is PowerPoint? Understanding the Ribbon, Quick Access Toolbar, and Status Bar.
    • Views and Zoom: Using Normal, Slide Sorter, Reading, and Slide Show views effectively.
    • Working with Files: Creating a new blank presentation, using templates, opening, saving (“Save” vs. “Save As”), and exporting to PDF.

Module 2: Creating and Managing Slides

  • Build the structural foundation of your presentation.
    • Adding Slides: Inserting new slides and choosing the right slide layout (Title, Title and Content, Section Header, etc.).
    • Managing Content Placeholders: Adding text and content into predefined boxes.
    • Slide Management: Organizing slides using Slide Sorter view, duplicating, moving, and deleting slides.

Module 3: Basic Text and Shape Formatting

  • Make your content visually clear and engaging.
    • Working with Text: Adding & formatting text (Font, Size, Color), using bullet points and numbered lists, and working with text boxes (vs. placeholders).
    • Introduction to Shapes: Inserting shapes, applying styles and fills, adding text to shapes, and adjusting size and rotation.
    • Alignment and Ordering: Using alignment guides, distributing objects evenly, and managing object layers (Bring Forward/Send Backward).

Module 4: Inserting Images and Multimedia

  • Enhance your presentation with visual and audio elements.
    • Working with Images: Inserting pictures from your device and online sources, using the Picture Format tab to crop, apply corrections, artistic effects, and remove backgrounds.
    • Icons & Illustrations: Using PowerPoint’s built-in library of icons, 3D models, and scalable vector graphics.
    • Adding Video & Audio: Inserting video and audio files, formatting video playback, and adjusting audio settings.

Module 5: Applying Basic Transitions and Animations

  • Add subtle movement to guide your audience’s attention.
    • Slide Transitions: Applying transitions between slides, effect options, and timing (duration, advance on click vs. after time).
    • Object Animations: Applying Entrance, Emphasis, and Exit animations to text and objects.
    • Animation Pane: Using the Animation Pane to modify effect options, change the order of animations, and set timing (start: on click, with previous, after previous).

Module 6: Presentation Tips and Techniques (The Final Rehearsal)

  • Prepare to deliver your presentation confidently and professionally.
    • Review and Proofing: Using the Spelling & Thesaurus tool, adding and reviewing speaker notes.
    • Presenter View: Configuring and using Presenter View to see notes, jump to slides, and use the pen/highlighter tool during a presentation.
    • Rehearsal & Delivery: Setting up slide show options (monitor settings), rehearsing timings, and practicing key presentation skills (pace, tone, body language).
    • Sharing Your Work: Tips for presenting online (via Teams/Zoom) and packaging your presentation for email.
