Overview:
Move beyond the basics and unlock Word’s powerful tools for creating complex, consistent, and collaborative documents. Master styles, advanced formatting, references, and review tools to work smarter, not harder.
Target Audience:
Users comfortable with Word basics who need to create longer reports, professional documents, or collaborate with others.
Upon completion, students will be able to:
- Use advanced formatting tools like columns, text boxes, and SmartArt.
- Create and apply Styles and Themes for rapid, consistent formatting.
- Design and modify complex tables to organize data effectively.
- Implement dynamic headers, footers, and page numbers.
- Collaborate using Track Changes and Comments.
- Execute a basic Mail Merge to create personalized documents.
Outline
Module 1: Advanced Formatting Tools
- Page Layout:Â Setting custom margins, orientation, and applying columns.
- Objects & Graphics:Â Inserting and formatting Text Boxes, WordArt, and SmartArt graphics.
- Page Background:Â Adding watermarks, page borders, and page color.
Module 2: Using Styles and Themes
- Understanding Styles:Â Applying built-in styles (Title, Heading 1, etc.) and modifying them.
- Creating Custom Styles:Â Building and saving your own styles for text, lists, and paragraphs.
- Document Themes:Â Applying and customizing Themes to change fonts, colors, and effects globally.
Module 3: Creating and Modifying Tables
- Table Design:Â Using the Table Designer tab to apply styles, shading, and borders.
- Table Layout:Â Sorting data, merging and splitting cells, and adjusting row/column distribution.
- Calculations & Formulas:Â Performing basic calculations (e.g., Sum, Average) within a table.
Module 4: Working with Headers and Footers
- Basics:Â Adding and editing text, dates, and page numbers in headers/footers.
- Advanced Options:Â Creating different first-page headers and different odd/even page headers.
- Linking Sections:Â Understanding how to unlink headers/footers between document sections.
Module 5: Track Changes and Comments
- Tracking Changes:Â Turning on Track Changes, showing revisions, and understanding different views (All Markup, No Markup, Original).
- Reviewing Pane:Â Using the pane to navigate through changes.
- Accepting/Rejecting & Comments:Â Resolving edits and using comments for feedback without changing the text.
Module 6: Mail Merge Basics
- The Mail Merge Process:Â Using the step-by-step wizard.
- Selecting a Data Source:Â Connecting your document to an Excel list or Outlook Contacts.
- Inserting Merge Fields & Completing the Merge:Â Adding personalized fields and generating the final documents.
