Overview

This advanced course provides a deep dive into the sophisticated techniques and strategies used to identify, analyze, and mitigate risks in complex, high-stakes projects. Move beyond the basics to master quantitative analysis, develop robust response strategies, and create a resilient project environment.

  • Identifying Black Swans and Unknown Unknowns: Strategies for anticipating emergent and unpredictable risks.
  • Documenting Risks: Structuring a risk statement (Cause -> Risk -> Effect) and enhancing the risk register.

Module 2: Qualitative and Quantitative Risk Assessment Techniques

  • Advanced Qualitative Analysis: Probability and Impact Matrix with weighted criteria, risk categorization, and risk urgency assessment.
  • Introduction to Quantitative Analysis: Understanding when and why to use quantitative methods.
  • Quantitative Tools & Techniques: Expected Monetary Value (EMV) analysis, Decision Tree Analysis, and Monte Carlo simulations (conceptual understanding).

Module 3: Risk Prioritization and Response Planning

  • Risk Prioritization: Using the results of qualitative/quantitative analysis to create a ranked risk list.
  • Response Strategies for Threats: Deep dive into Avoid, Transfer, Mitigate, and Accept strategies, including creating contingency plans and fallback plans.
  • Response Strategies for Opportunities: Leveraging Exploit, Enhance, Share, and Accept strategies.

Module 4: Implementation of Risk Mitigation Strategies

  • Integrating Responses into the Project Plan: Adding risk responses (mitigation tasks, contingency reserves) to the schedule, budget, and WBS.
