Master Word’s most powerful features for long-form documents, automation, and secure collaboration. Learn to manage citations, indexes, macros, and complex reviews to produce high-quality professional reports, manuscripts, and legal documents.

Target Audience:

Researchers, technical writers, administrative professionals, and anyone who regularly creates long, complex, or collaboratively edited documents.

Upon completion, students will be able to:

  • Create complex documents with automatic tables of contents, figures, and cross-references.
  • Build and update bibliographies, citations, and indexes.
  • Execute advanced Mail Merges using conditional rules and external data sources.
  • Record, edit, and run simple VBA macros to automate repetitive tasks.
  • Apply advanced security features, including digital signatures and restricted editing.
  • Manage and compare multiple versions of shared documents effectively.

Module 1: Creating Complex Documents with References

  • Mastering Styles: Using Outline View and modifying Styles to create a hierarchical document structure.
  • Automatic Tables: Generating a Table of Contents (TOC) and a Table of Figures (TOF) from Styles.
  • Cross-Referencing: Inserting dynamic cross-references to headings, figures, tables, and numbered items.

  • Citations & Bibliography: Using the Citations & Bibliography tools (APA, MLA, Chicago styles) to manage sources.
  • Marking Index Entries: Manually marking words and phrases for inclusion in an index.
  • Generating the Index: Creating, updating, and formatting a multi-level index at the end of the document.

Module 3: Advanced Mail Merge Techniques

  • Conditional Content: Using IF, FILLIN, and NEXT fields within a merge to create dynamic content.
  • Merging with Outlook: Using your Outlook Contacts as a data source directly.
  • Troubleshooting: Debugging common data source and field errors in complex merges.

Module 4: Using Macros for Automation
